Embark on an unforgettable journey through Thailand, a biodiversity hotspot in Southeast Asia, where over 1,000 bird species thrive. From the vibrant colors of pheasants, pittas, and broadbills to the iconic hornbills and kingfishers, this tour promises to be an exciting exploration of Thailand’s rich avian life.

Our adventure begins in Chiang Mai, where we’ll visit the historic temple of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, and explore the city.

We then head north to Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park, a region teeming with remarkable species like the Giant Nuthatch and Mrs. Hume’s Pheasant. Continuing to Doi Inthanon National Park, we’ll summit Thailand’s highest mountain. We’ll look for treasures like the Blossom-headed Parakeet and Common Flameback woodpecker. Afterward, we’ll fly to the bustling city of Bangkok. Experience a day of cultural immersion with visits to the Grand Palace and temple of Wat Phra Kaew.

Our final stops include the wetlands of Pak Thale, where we’ll search for the critically endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper, and Kaeng Krachan National Park, where the lush evergreen forests are home to a wealth of wildlife, including Sun Bears and Asian Elephants. This birding tour offers not just incredible wildlife, but a chance to experience Thailand’s warm hospitality and stunning natural beauty.

Itinerary at a Glance

Day 1 - Nov 6: Arrive to Chiang Mai

Arrive in Chiang Mai, meet the tour leaders, and settle into the hotel. Evening refreshments and a brief meeting.

Day 2 - Nov 7: Sites Around Chiang Mai

Optional bird walk in the morning. Visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple, followed by evening free time to explore Chiang Mai’s night markets.

Day 3 - Nov 8: Birding on the way to Fang

Drive north from Chiang Mai with birding stops en route. Arrive in Fang for a three-night stay.

Day 4 - Nov 9: Doi Lang and Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park

Bird along the Doi Lang Road, with stops at birding stations to see a variety of species in the national park.

Day 5 - Nov 10: King’s Project Botanical Gardens

Visit the King’s Project Botanical Garden and nearby birding stations, followed by a relaxing evening.

Day 6 - Nov 11: Driving to Doi Inthanon

Drive south to Doi Inthanon National Park, with stops along the way. Explore the lodge gardens upon arrival.

Day 7 - Nov 12: Doi Inthanon National Park

Explore diverse ecosystems and birding sites in Doi Inthanon, including scenic waterfalls and the twin pagodas at the park’s peak.

Day 8 - Nov 13: Doi Inthanon National Park, continued

Another full day to explore the rich birding habitats of Doi Inthanon.

Day 9 - Nov 14: Flight to Bangkok

Drive to Bangkok with an afternoon flight. Evening free to explore the city.

Day 10 - Nov 15: Exploring Bangkok

Tour Bangkok’s famous temples, including Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace. Free afternoon for personal exploration.

Day 11 - Nov 16: Salt Pans and Spoon-billed Sandpiper

Visit the Pak Thale salt pans near Petchaburi to search for shorebirds, including the rare Spoon-billed Sandpiper.

Day 12 - Nov 17: Kaeng Krachan National Park

Explore Thailand’s largest national park, home to 500 bird species, mammals like Sun Bear, and other wildlife.

Day 13 - Nov 18: Kaeng Krachan National Park, continued

A second day to explore Kaeng Krachan and search for species missed on the previous day.

Day 14 - Nov 19: Return to Bangkok

Morning birding near the lodge before a leisurely drive back to Bangkok for the final night.

Ivan Phillipsen, Co-owner of Wild Latitudes, is a passionate naturalist with a background in scientific research. He holds an M.S. in biology and a Ph.D. in zoology. Natural history is Ivan’s true passion and what he is most excited to teach to others. Although he is fascinated by just about every aspect of nature, Ivan is particularly fond of birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, plants, and geology. Everything is interconnected in nature and Ivan takes a holistic approach when teaching about the natural world.

Dan Van den Broek spent the past 18 years leading birding tours throughout the world, sharing amazing experiences with hundreds of people. He believes that to understand the rich and varied lives of birds opens a window into the interconnectedness of our world. Critical to our understanding of nature and conservation is to consider how people and nature can coexist in a mutually beneficial way and vital to travel is to ensure that people and nature benefit from tourism.
